Subaru Natsuki leaves a convenience store and abruptly finds himself in the royal capital of an unfamiliar fantasy world. His modern money is useless, he cannot read the local writing, and three thieves quickly teach him that he has gained no convenient heroic powers. A silver-haired half-elf accompanied by the spirit Puck rescues him, then reluctantly accepts his help recovering a stolen insignia. Calling herself Satella, she searches the slums with Subaru until they reach a loot house operated by the giant Rom. They discover Rom and the thief Felt murdered, and the assassin Elsa kills Subaru and Satella as well. Subaru suddenly awakens beside the same fruit seller he met earlier, with the day apparently reset and everyone else unaware of what happened. After another attempt ends with Elsa slaughtering the group during negotiations for the insignia, Subaru returns once more. He approaches the silver-haired girl and calls her Satella, only to learn that the name belongs to the feared Witch of Envy and deeply offends her.

Confused by the repeated day, Subaru tries to determine whether his memories are hallucinations or evidence that death sends him backward in time. He attempts to stop Felt before she steals the insignia, but his interference only changes the circumstances: the alley thieves stab him while he pursues her, triggering another reset. Subaru finally accepts that he possesses “Return by Death” and decides to reach the loot house before Elsa can complete her transaction. Reinhard van Astrea, a passing knight, saves him from the thieves. Subaru asks Reinhard to warn the silver-haired girl away from danger, then hurries into the slums. At the loot house, Subaru uses knowledge gained in earlier loops to impress Felt and Rom, offering his unusual mobile phone in exchange for Emilia’s insignia. Felt remains suspicious and insists on comparing his offer with Elsa’s. Subaru’s anxiety grows as the expected meeting time approaches. When someone knocks, he prepares for the assassin, but the visitor is the silver-haired half-elf herself. Her unexpected arrival leaves Subaru facing the same lethal confrontation with fewer certainties than before.

Elsa arrives at the loot house and attacks before Subaru can safely resolve the exchange. The silver-haired girl and Puck defend everyone with ice magic, while Subaru uses his previous deaths to anticipate Elsa’s movements and warn the others. Nightfall weakens Puck and forces him back into his crystal, leaving the half-elf increasingly exhausted. Rom is gravely wounded and Felt escapes to seek help. Reinhard soon enters, identifies himself as the Sword Saint, and overwhelms Elsa with an immense magical strike. Elsa survives the blast, however, and launches a final surprise attack at the half-elf. Subaru intercepts the blade with Rom’s club and protects her, although Elsa’s slash opens his abdomen. Before he loses consciousness, the girl finally reveals that her true name is Emilia. Felt returns the stolen insignia, and Emilia heals Rom while tending to Subaru. Reinhard notices the insignia reacting in Felt’s hand and takes the thief into custody for reasons beyond her crime. He warns Emilia that her peaceful routine is ending, hinting that both women are connected to the approaching royal selection.

Subaru awakens fully healed in Roswaal Mathers’s mansion after Emilia brings him there. While exploring at night, he repeatedly encounters a mysterious door and enters Beatrice’s hidden library. The young-looking spirit librarian drains his mana and leaves him unconscious, after which he wakes again to the twin maids Ram and Rem. Subaru reunites with Emilia and Puck and meets Roswaal, the eccentric noble who sponsors Emilia’s candidacy in the royal selection. Roswaal explains that the insignia proves Emilia’s eligibility to compete for the throne. Offered a reward for his assistance in the capital, Subaru chooses employment at the mansion rather than wealth. His enthusiasm exceeds his domestic ability, and Ram and Rem train him through cleaning, laundry, cooking, and shopping. During a visit to nearby Arlam Village, Subaru befriends local children and is bitten by a small puppy. He persuades Emilia to promise him a village date after his duties are complete. Yet on the morning of their planned outing, Subaru awakens back at his first day in the mansion. His healed hand and the twins’ unfamiliar greetings confirm that he died unnoticed during the night.

Returned to the mansion’s first morning, Subaru repeats his request to become a servant and tries to reconstruct the four days preceding his unexplained death. Small changes immediately complicate the experiment. Ram begins teaching him the local written language, while Rem remains guarded and quietly evaluates his behavior. Subaru improves at household work, jokes with Ram, and learns that the sisters’ devotion to each other is central to their lives. During shopping, Rem describes Ram’s dedication as almost demonic and asks Subaru what he thinks of ogres, an exchange he cannot yet interpret. Emilia also helps with his reading lessons, and Subaru again secures a promise to visit the village together. Determined to survive the night when he previously died, he reviews every contact and possible source of danger, but exhaustion defeats him. Subaru wakes violently ill, with his strength and senses failing as though something is draining his life. He staggers into the hallway seeking help. Before he can identify the threat, an unseen attacker strikes with a chained weapon, brutally tearing him apart and ending the loop before the promised morning arrives.

Subaru begins a third mansion loop with only four days to identify his killer. Rather than working as a servant, he asks to remain as Roswaal’s guest, hoping distance will let him observe the household more objectively. Beatrice explains that fatal weakness could result from a curse or severe mana loss, though she doubts either explanation within the mansion. Subaru spends time with Ram, sharing the story of red and blue ogres and learning more about Lugunica’s legends. Her refusal to discuss the Witch of Envy makes the household’s hidden tensions even clearer. On the fourth day, Subaru leaves the estate and watches it from a distant cliff, expecting the attack to reveal whether the danger comes from outside. At sunset, a massive spiked flail crashes toward him. Remembering the sound that preceded his previous death, Subaru dodges repeated blows and grabs the weapon’s chain. The attacker steps from the forest: Rem. She shows none of her usual reserved kindness and accuses him of suspicious behavior. Subaru realizes that the person he was trying to protect has considered him an enemy throughout this timeline.

Rem restrains and tortures Subaru, convinced that his unexplained knowledge, suspicious movements, and powerful scent of the Witch mark him as an enemy of Emilia. Subaru insists that he cares for the mansion’s residents, but his answers cannot explain the impossible information he carries from previous lives. Ram finally kills him from a distance, ending Rem’s interrogation. After resetting, Subaru is terrified of both sisters and attempts to tell Emilia about Return by Death. A shadowy force grips his heart and demonstrates that the power forbids disclosure. Subaru instead contracts Beatrice to protect him through the fourth night. He survives, only to discover Rem dead the following morning from the same mysterious curse that once killed him. Ram, devastated and suspicious, attacks Subaru, but Beatrice honors their agreement and shields him. Subaru flees to the cliff, where Beatrice offers escape while Ram demands revenge. Recognizing that merely protecting himself produced another tragedy, Subaru chooses a more painful reset. He leaps from the cliff, declaring that he genuinely loves the people of the mansion and will save all of them, even those who killed him in other timelines.

Subaru returns to the mansion determined to rebuild trust rather than treat its residents as pieces in a puzzle. He becomes a servant again, works relentlessly, and asks Puck to evaluate his magical potential. Puck identifies Subaru’s affinity as shadow magic and teaches him Shamac, a spell that disrupts an opponent’s senses. Beatrice explains the legend of Satella and confirms that the Witch’s lingering scent clings strongly to Subaru, helping him understand Rem’s suspicion. He forces himself to remain cheerful while repeating chores, lessons, and conversations, but the emotional burden of multiple deaths and secret memories becomes unbearable. Emilia notices his exhaustion and gives him a quiet place to cry in her lap, allowing him to admit fear without revealing Return by Death. The release restores his ability to think. Remembering Beatrice’s explanation that curses require physical contact before activation, Subaru realizes the attacker likely touched him during the village trip. His deaths were not caused by a mansion resident. With renewed confidence, he arranges for Ram and Rem to accompany him to Arlam Village, intending to identify the curse’s source before anyone is killed.

Subaru visits Arlam Village with Ram and Rem and deliberately interacts with every resident, hoping Beatrice can later identify who placed the curse. The same puppy bites his hand, but Subaru initially focuses on finding a human shaman. Back at the mansion, Beatrice confirms that he is cursed and traces the contact to the bite, revealing that the harmless-looking animal is a mabeast. Subaru realizes the village children are also targets. He and Rem return at night and discover several children missing beyond the protective barrier. In the forest, they find most of them unconscious and marked by bites. While Rem treats the group, Subaru searches alone for the final child. He rescues her from a wolgarm, but a whole pack surrounds him under the puppy’s control. Rem arrives and cuts a path toward safety, revealing extraordinary combat power. As the mabeasts overwhelm them, her single horn emerges and she enters an uncontrollable oni state. Subaru refuses to abandon her despite knowing she once killed him. When a beast prepares to strike Rem from behind, he places himself between them, choosing courage and trust over self-preservation.

Subaru survives because Emilia and Ram arrive in time, but the many wolgarm bites have woven numerous curses through his body. Beatrice cannot remove them all, and unless every creature responsible is killed, Subaru will die within hours. Rem, blaming herself for the danger, has already returned to the forest alone. Subaru refuses to wait and joins Ram in pursuing her. Ram explains that losing her horn years earlier left her far weaker than Rem, forcing the pair to rely on strategy rather than power. Subaru exploits the Witch’s scent by deliberately invoking the forbidden subject of Return by Death, drawing the mabeast pack toward himself. He and Ram tumble from a cliff and encounter Rem, who is berserk in oni form and unable to distinguish allies from enemies. Using Ram’s instructions, Subaru dodges Rem’s attacks and strikes her horn, temporarily returning her to herself. Their reunion is cut short by the transformed puppy shaman and the surrounding pack. Exhausted, wounded, and still cursed, Subaru must protect both sisters while the true controller of the attack reveals a much larger and more dangerous body.

Rem dreams of childhood in the oni village where twins were considered an ill omen. Ram possessed exceptional power and drew everyone’s admiration, while Rem lived in her shadow. When the Witch Cult attacked, Ram’s horn was severed. Rem felt a moment of relief before horror and has carried guilt ever since, devoting herself to replacing everything her sister lost. In the present, Subaru’s strike restores Rem’s senses. As the mabeasts close in, Subaru stays behind so Ram can carry her sister to safety. He confronts the puppy shaman in its enormous transformed state and wounds it with his broken sword, but cannot stop its final attack. Roswaal arrives and destroys the creature and remaining pack with overwhelming magic, ending the curses on Subaru. Back at the mansion, Subaru awakens beside Rem and rejects her belief that she is merely an inferior substitute for Ram. He asks her to live for her own future and to begin again rather than remain imprisoned by guilt. His faith changes how Rem sees herself and Subaru. With peace restored, Subaru finally repeats his invitation to Emilia, and their long-delayed village date is accepted.

A month after the mabeast attack, Subaru has settled into life at the mansion and grown closer to Emilia, Rem, and the villagers. Wilhelm van Astrea and the healer Felix Argyle arrive with orders summoning Emilia to the royal capital for the formal selection of the next ruler. Subaru insists on accompanying her and travels with Rem. In the capital, he thanks the fruit seller whose stall became his repeated checkpoint, meets the polished knight Julius Juukulius, and reacts jealously when Julius kisses Emilia’s hand. Subaru later encounters Priscilla Barielle being followed by the same alley thugs from his earliest loops. The situation reveals another royal candidate and brings him back into contact with Rom, who is searching for Felt. Emilia explicitly asks Subaru not to attend the castle gathering, fearing his impulsiveness will cause trouble. Subaru nevertheless accepts a carriage ride from Priscilla and her masked attendant Al, breaking his promise. Inside the throne room, the known candidates gather with their supporters. Reinhard then presents Felt as the fifth candidate, transforming the thief from the slums into a central figure in Lugunica’s royal election.
