Episode 37
Summary
Captain Nezumi arrives with Marines and searches Nami's home, claiming that her hidden money was stolen property. Nami realizes that Arlong told him exactly where to find the one hundred million berries she spent eight years collecting. She attacks the Marines but is restrained as they dig up the treasure from Bellemere's grove. Nezumi takes it for himself, leaving Nami unable to buy the village despite fulfilling her side of the agreement. Arlong smugly insists that he never personally broke his promise and can simply wait while she starts again. The villagers reveal that they always knew why Nami joined him. No longer willing to watch her suffer, they arm themselves and march toward Arlong Park even though they expect to die. Nami tries to stop them, then collapses and repeatedly stabs the fish-man tattoo on her shoulder. Luffy quietly prevents her from hurting herself. When she finally asks him for help, he places his treasured straw hat on her head and answers with absolute certainty. Luffy, Zoro, Sanji, and Usopp walk together toward Arlong Park. Their arrival transforms Nami's private despair into an open declaration of war against the fish-men.
Episode 38
Summary
The Straw Hats smash through the entrance of Arlong Park, and Luffy immediately demands to know which fish-man is Arlong. He punches the captain across the compound and declares that Nami is his navigator. Arlong summons the sea cow Momoo, but Luffy uses the creature's momentum to spin it through the air and hurl it away, knocking out many lesser pirates. The main officers step forward: Hatchan faces Zoro, Kuroobi confronts Sanji, and Chew targets Usopp. Luffy tries to attack Arlong again, but his feet become embedded in solid ground after a powerful kick. Arlong tears up the section of stone around him and throws Luffy into the swimming pool, where his Devil Fruit weakness leaves him unable to move or breathe. Nojiko and Genzo dive in and stretch Luffy's neck above the surface while the crew fights to free his body. Zoro's wound opens, shocking Arlong when he sees how severely Mihawk injured him. Despite fever and blood loss, Zoro refuses to fall. With their captain trapped underwater, each Straw Hat must win an individual battle while Arlong watches with growing interest and contempt.
Episode 39
Summary
Zoro fights Hatchan, an octopus fish-man who wields six swords and boasts that his many arms make him a superior swordsman. Zoro is still recovering from Mihawk's slash and can barely remain upright, but he hides his weakness behind aggression. After borrowing Johnny and Yosaku's swords, he counters Hatchan's spinning attacks and defeats him with a three-sword technique. The victory leaves Zoro close to collapse. Sanji initially attempts to free Luffy by diving into the pool, but Kuroobi follows and exploits the fish-man advantage underwater. Sanji realizes he cannot win in that environment and provokes Kuroobi into returning to land by attacking his gills. Meanwhile, Usopp runs from Chew and is ashamed that the villagers may see him as a coward. He briefly considers pretending to be injured until he imagines how his crewmates would judge him. Nojiko and Genzo keep Luffy's stretched neck above water, but Arlong moves to interfere. Zoro attacks the captain to buy time, and Arlong is startled by his endurance. The battle becomes a race between the crew's individual victories and Luffy's rapidly failing strength.
Episode 40
Summary
Sanji draws Kuroobi onto land, where the fish-man's underwater martial arts lose much of their advantage. Although Kuroobi crushes him with powerful strikes, Sanji recalls Zeff's lessons and unleashes a rapid series of kicks that breaks through his opponent's defenses. He defeats Kuroobi and rushes back toward the pool to rescue Luffy. Elsewhere, Usopp continues fleeing from Chew until he decides that surviving through deception is different from abandoning his friends. He uses oil, alcohol, and a flaming projectile to set Chew on fire, then repeatedly strikes him with a hammer while pretending each blow is far stronger than it is. His improvised plan defeats the fish-man and gives Usopp a genuine victory he can proudly exaggerate later. At Arlong Park, Zoro struggles to delay Arlong while Sanji dives and destroys the stone trapping Luffy's feet. Arlong attacks the divers, but Genzo and Nojiko pull Luffy free. The captain remains unconscious after being underwater, so Sanji carries him to land while Zoro faces Arlong alone. With Hatchan, Kuroobi, and Chew defeated, the Straw Hats have removed Arlong's officers, but their captain must awaken before the exhausted crew is overwhelmed.
Episode 41
Summary
Luffy finally regains consciousness after being pulled from the pool and immediately resumes his fight with Arlong. Nami arrives wearing Luffy's straw hat, no longer hiding her wish to be free. Arlong boasts that her mapmaking talent belongs to him and that no human crew can use her as effectively as the fish-men. Luffy answers that he cannot navigate, cook, lie convincingly, or wield swords, but his friends can do those things and he can defeat the enemy who makes them suffer. Arlong attacks with his powerful jaws, repeatedly growing replacement teeth and using them as weapons. Luffy breaks the teeth, withstands the bites, and forces the battle into the tower where Nami has spent years drawing maps. When he sees the bloodstained pens and the room that served as her prison, he understands the nature of her pain without needing a detailed explanation. He begins destroying the tower itself, declaring that Nami never needs to work there again. Outside, the villagers and exhausted Straw Hats watch the structure shake while Nami realizes that Luffy is not merely defeating Arlong; he is erasing the physical symbol of her captivity.
Episode 42
Summary
Arlong becomes enraged as Luffy tears apart Nami's map room and attacks with Kiribachi, a massive saw-edged sword. The fish-man captain uses his strength and speed to drive Luffy through walls, then launches himself from the water like a living torpedo. Luffy is cut and battered but continues wrecking the tower, refusing to let Arlong preserve the place where Nami was enslaved. Arlong argues that fish-men are naturally superior to humans and that Nami's intelligence proves she should serve the strongest race. Luffy rejects the idea that ability gives anyone ownership over another person. Below, Sanji, Zoro, and Usopp can only watch because their own fights have left them badly wounded. Nezumi waits nearby, hoping to claim credit once the battle ends, while the villagers stand ready to resist if Luffy falls. Nami clutches the straw hat and remembers the years she spent alone at the desk above them. Luffy uses the building's walls and beams to redirect Arlong's attacks, gradually creating an opening. The conflict reaches its final exchange as Arlong prepares to crush him and Luffy raises an enlarged foot over the collapsing tower.
Episode 43
Summary
Luffy brings his giant foot down through Arlong Park, smashing Arlong through the map room and collapsing the tower. The fish-man captain is defeated, and the headquarters that represented eight years of oppression falls around him. For several tense moments, the villagers fear Luffy has been buried as well. He emerges from the rubble and shouts that Nami is his crewmate, finally allowing her to cry with relief. Cocoyashi Village celebrates its freedom while the surviving fish-men are taken into custody. Nezumi attempts to confiscate Arlong's treasure and arrest the pirates, but the battered Straw Hats drive him away. Humiliated, he reports Luffy to Marine headquarters and ensures that the young captain receives his first bounty. Nami removes Arlong's tattoo, though the doctor preserves part of its design and transforms it into a pinwheel-and-tangerine symbol honoring Genzo and Bellemere. Zoro, Sanji, and Usopp recover among the villagers, and Luffy eats through the celebration. The victory restores Nami's home but also forces her to decide whether to remain there or continue sailing. Her bond with the crew has become public and undeniable, ending the isolation on which Arlong depended.
Episode 44
Summary
Cocoyashi Village holds a long celebration after Arlong's defeat, and the Straw Hats rest while their wounds heal. Nami decides to return to sea as the Going Merry's navigator, but she avoids a formal goodbye because she fears the villagers will try to stop her. Nojiko understands her decision, and Genzo warns Luffy never to take away Nami's smile. When the crew prepares to depart, Nami tells everyone to leave immediately and runs through the crowd without embracing anyone. The villagers discover why when she leaps aboard and reveals the wallets she stole from them during her farewell sprint. Their outrage turns into laughter, a final reminder that she remains the same mischievous thief they love. Nami leaves part of her money behind and carries Bellemere's memory with her. At sea, she officially takes charge of navigation and scolds the crew for handling the ship carelessly. The Going Merry now carries five committed members: Luffy, Zoro, Nami, Usopp, and Sanji. Their East Blue journey is no longer a collection of temporary alliances. With Nami choosing adventure freely, the crew begins moving toward Loguetown and the entrance to the Grand Line.
Episode 45
Summary
News of Arlong's defeat spreads across East Blue, and Marine headquarters issues Luffy a thirty-million-berry bounty—the highest initial bounty in the region. Nezumi exaggerates the threat to protect his own reputation, but the poster accurately marks Luffy as a pirate the government can no longer ignore. The crew reacts with a mixture of pride and alarm. Luffy is delighted by his photograph, Usopp boasts that the back of his head appears in it, and Nami worries that stronger enemies will now pursue them. Copies of the poster reach people connected to the crew: Kaya and the Usopp Pirates celebrate, Zeff and the Baratie cooks laugh at Sanji's new companions, and Nojiko and Genzo recognize Nami's choice. Mihawk delivers the poster to Shanks, who is pleased that Luffy has finally begun making a name for himself. At sea, the Straw Hats continue toward Loguetown, the last major stop before the Grand Line. The bounty confirms that Luffy's actions have consequences beyond the islands he visits. His dream is becoming visible to the world, attracting admiration, danger, and the attention of powerful figures who remember the boy beneath the straw hat.
Episode 46
Summary
After Luffy's attack scattered his body, Buggy survives as a miniature version of himself with only his hands, feet, and head attached. Separated from his crew, he begins a humiliating journey across the sea while pursuing revenge against the Straw Hat captain. Buggy attempts to steal a boat, is chased by strange animals, and briefly becomes the captive plaything of a giant bird. On an island of unusual creatures, he encounters Gaimon, who refuses to help him harm Luffy but shares food and conversation. Buggy's reduced size repeatedly turns his threats into comedy, yet his determination to recover his body remains strong. Meanwhile, Mohji and Cabaji argue over who should replace their missing captain. Their duel lasts through the night and ends with both exhausted, allowing Richie the lion to become captain by accident. The crew is then attacked by a tribe of giant birds and forced to flee. Buggy eventually meets a mysterious woman whose appearance has changed dramatically since she ate a Devil Fruit. She also hates Luffy and proposes an alliance. The episode follows the villain's cover-story adventure while moving his scattered crew toward an eventual reunion.
Episode 47
Summary
Buggy's former crew struggles under Richie's accidental leadership until the mysterious woman and the miniature captain approach their camp. The woman is Alvida, now transformed by the Smooth-Smooth Fruit, which makes attacks slide harmlessly off her skin. She wants revenge on Luffy for defeating her and agrees to help Buggy recover his missing body parts. Mohji and Cabaji initially fail to recognize their captain, but Buggy locates the pieces stored in a chest and restores himself to normal size. His return ends the crew's leadership dispute, and the pirates celebrate while plotting to pursue Luffy. Buggy and Alvida combine their forces, united by resentment rather than trust. Elsewhere, the Straw Hats remain unaware that two earlier enemies are following them toward Loguetown. The episode completes Buggy's side adventure and explains how he survives the Orange Town defeat, reunites with his crew, and gains a new ally. His renewed confidence contrasts with the absurd hardships he endured while incomplete. By setting both groups on the same course, the story prepares Loguetown to become a meeting point for old grudges, Marine opposition, and the crew's final preparations before entering the Grand Line.
Episode 48
Summary
The Straw Hats arrive at Loguetown, the city where Gol D. Roger was born and executed. Because it is their final supply stop before the Grand Line, the crew separates to shop. Luffy immediately heads for the execution platform, curious to see the place where the Pirate King began the Great Pirate Era. Nami buys clothes and navigational equipment, Sanji searches for ingredients, Usopp visits weapon shops, and Zoro looks for replacement swords. Marine Captain Smoker oversees the town and has never allowed a pirate to escape his jurisdiction. He learns that Luffy has arrived and mobilizes his forces. At the platform, Luffy climbs to the top and looks over the city from Roger's final position. Buggy and Alvida have also reached Loguetown and prepare an ambush, while Smoker studies the wanted poster and senses that the newcomer may be unusually dangerous. The episode treats the city as both a historical destination and a threshold. Luffy's cheerful curiosity places him in the footsteps of the man he hopes to surpass, but the gathering enemies make clear that reaching the Grand Line will require more than buying supplies and following a map.
