Nojiko's account returns fully to Nami's childhood. Bellemere had rescued infant Nami and young Nojiko from a war-torn village and left the Marines to raise them in Cocoyashi. Their household often lacked money, but Bellemere taught the girls pride, independence, and the importance of family. Nami's talent for navigation grew alongside her frustration with poverty, leading to an argument in which she said that Bellemere was not her real mother. Before they could reconcile, Arlong's crew occupied the island and demanded one hundred thousand berries from each adult and half that amount for every child. Bellemere possessed enough money to pay only for herself or for the two girls. Genzo and the villagers urged her to deny having daughters, but she could not erase their relationship to save her own life. Bellemere used the money for Nami and Nojiko and openly declared them her children. Arlong prepared to execute her as an example.
