Gin attacks Sanji with heavy iron tonfas, demonstrating why Krieg's crew calls him the Man-Demon. Sanji refuses to defend himself properly while Zeff remains a hostage, allowing Gin to break his ribs and batter him across the deck. Even so, Gin remembers the meal Sanji gave him and begins hesitating before the final strike. Krieg condemns that compassion as weakness and orders Gin to kill the cook immediately. When Gin admits that he cannot do it, Krieg sentences him along with everyone else and prepares his MH5 poison-gas weapon. The pirates panic because they know the gas will kill anyone who breathes it. Krieg distributes protective masks but secretly denies Gin one as punishment. Luffy and the Baratie fighters obtain masks while Sanji searches for a way to save Gin. At the moment the gas shell explodes, Gin throws his own mask to Luffy, believing the captain's enemy must survive. Sanji then discovers another mask beside him and assumes Gin protected him as well. After the cloud clears, Gin remains standing only briefly before collapsing from exposure. His refusal to murder Sanji finally breaks Krieg's control over him and strengthens Luffy's determination to defeat the commodore.
