After returning to the graveyard checkpoint, Subaru immediately comforts Emilia and proposes taking the remaining trials himself. Garfiel reacts with hostility, while Emilia interprets the suggestion as proof that Subaru doubts her. Subaru changes tactics and asks Roswaal for permission to inspect the mansion early, bringing Ram with him. During the trip, Ram experiences faint emotional reactions to Rem despite having no conscious memory of her sister. At the mansion, Subaru reunites Ram with the sleeping Rem and presses Frederica about the crystal that transported him. Frederica insists an oath prevents her from explaining. Elsa appears holding Petra hostage, forcing Subaru, Ram, and Frederica into a desperate rescue. Frederica transforms into a powerful beast to confront Elsa, while Subaru and Ram retrieve Petra and Rem. Their escape route is then blocked by a mabeast controlled by an unseen tamer. One by one Subaru’s allies are killed, leaving him unable to save either the household or Rem. When Elsa corners him, Subaru dives toward Rem’s bedroom but passes through a door into Beatrice’s forbidden library instead. He survives the massacre only because Beatrice chose to pull him away, a selective rescue that fills him with horror rather than relief.
