Subaru searches the devastated mansion and finds Ram, the villagers, and the children dead. An unnatural winter fills the estate, and a colossal presence tells him that he arrived too late before the cold kills him. Resetting at the capital’s fruit stall, Subaru collapses into a nearly unresponsive state. Crusch and Felix find no physical cause, and Rem escorts him toward the mansion. Witch Cultists ambush their carriage. Rem fights fiercely, but Subaru is captured and taken to their leader, the Sin Archbishop of Sloth, Petelgeuse Romanée-Conti. Petelgeuse recognizes the Witch’s scent on Subaru yet condemns his catatonia as false madness. Rem attacks the hideout and is crushed by Petelgeuse’s invisible hands. After the cult departs, the dying Rem drags herself to Subaru, frees him with magic, tells him to live, and dies after confessing her love. Subaru carries her body through the slaughtered village to the mansion. There, the gigantic transformed Puck mourns Emilia and decapitates Subaru for failing to protect her. Back at the checkpoint once more, Subaru’s grief finally becomes focused hatred toward Petelgeuse and the cult.
