The royal selection begins amid open class prejudice and hostility toward Emilia’s resemblance to the Witch of Envy. Felt initially refuses her candidacy, but Rom invades the chamber trying to rescue her and is captured. To save him, Felt agrees to participate and declares that she intends to tear down Lugunica’s corrupt system. When nobles insult Emilia, Subaru publicly proclaims himself her knight. His boast also disparages the kingdom’s trained knights, provoking Julius and humiliating Emilia after she specifically asked him to stay away. Julius challenges Subaru to a wooden-sword duel and defeats him brutally, exposing the gap between Subaru’s self-image and actual ability. Emilia visits while he recovers and decides to return to the mansion without him. Subaru refuses to accept her choice and cannot explain the deaths and sacrifices that shaped his devotion.
