Subaru awakens fully healed in Roswaal Mathers’s mansion after Emilia brings him there. While exploring at night, he repeatedly encounters a mysterious door and enters Beatrice’s hidden library. The young-looking spirit librarian drains his mana and leaves him unconscious, after which he wakes again to the twin maids Ram and Rem. Subaru reunites with Emilia and Puck and meets Roswaal, the eccentric noble who sponsors Emilia’s candidacy in the royal selection. Roswaal explains that the insignia proves Emilia’s eligibility to compete for the throne. Offered a reward for his assistance in the capital, Subaru chooses employment at the mansion rather than wealth. His enthusiasm exceeds his domestic ability, and Ram and Rem train him through cleaning, laundry, cooking, and shopping. During a visit to nearby Arlam Village, Subaru befriends local children and is bitten by a small puppy. He persuades Emilia to promise him a village date after his duties are complete. Yet on the morning of their planned outing, Subaru awakens back at his first day in the mansion. His healed hand and the twins’ unfamiliar greetings confirm that he died unnoticed during the night.
