The White Whale pursues Otto’s wagon through the fog. Rem decides that only a sacrifice can buy Subaru time, knocks him unconscious, and remains behind to fight. Enraged by another person being erased, Subaru tries to reveal Return by Death to Emilia. The unseen penalty does not kill him; instead it crushes Emilia’s heart, leaving her dead in his arms. Beatrice teleports Subaru and Emilia’s body outside rather than granting his request for death. Petelgeuse and the cult gather around them, delighted by the tragedy. Puck assumes his monstrous true form and confronts the cultists as Emilia’s grieving guardian. Subaru has again reached an impossible ending: Rem has vanished from memory, Emilia is dead because of his confession, and the world is beginning to freeze.
