Luffy's group follows Nami toward the Conomi Islands with help from Yosaku, who explains that the area is ruled by the fish-man pirate Arlong. Nami reaches Arlong Park and is welcomed as an officer of the crew, revealing an apparent alliance that shocks Johnny. Usopp, Zoro, and Johnny arrive separately near Cocoyashi Village, where they meet Nojiko and learn that the residents live under heavy tribute demands. Zoro allows himself to be captured and brought before Arlong, partly to discover Nami's intentions. When Nami appears, she claims that she never cared about the Straw Hats and only traveled with them to steal treasure. Zoro tests her by throwing himself into the sea while tied up; Nami immediately dives in and saves him, exposing that she is not as indifferent as she pretends. Arlong boasts of fish-men's physical superiority and his ambition to rule East Blue using Nami's maps. Meanwhile, Luffy and Sanji encounter the sea cow Momoo, which Sanji defeats after it tries to steal their food. The scattered crew converges on the island while Nami tries desperately to keep them away from her dangerous secret.
