On the journey back from defeating the White Whale and Witch Cult, Subaru discovers that Emilia and everyone else have completely forgotten Rem. The cause is revealed through the attack on the returning forces: the Sin Archbishops Regulus Corneas and Lye Batenkaitos overwhelm Crusch and Rem, devouring Crusch’s memories and Rem’s name and memories. Rem is left comatose and erased from everyone’s awareness except Subaru’s. Desperate to undo the disaster, Subaru kills himself, only to awaken after the ambush, proving that his new checkpoint has already fixed the tragedy in place. At Crusch’s manor, the amnesiac Crusch struggles to understand the alliance she once formed, while Felix angrily proposes ending it. Subaru, Emilia, Wilhelm, and Crusch ultimately agree to continue cooperating despite their losses. Subaru then sits beside Rem and confronts the possibility that Return by Death cannot restore everything. Emilia finds him grieving and offers quiet comfort. The episode closes with Subaru renewing his promise to wake Rem and recover the life that Gluttony stole from her.
