Echidna explains that Subaru has entered a mental world containing her soul and serves him tea made from her bodily fluids, then probes his knowledge and intentions with amused curiosity. Before releasing him, she grants him permission to face the Sanctuary’s trials and removes his memory of their conversation until he leaves the graveyard. Subaru wakes in the ruins and is immediately attacked by Garfiel Tinsel, the Sanctuary’s aggressive guardian, but mentioning Frederica halts the fight. Reunited with Emilia and Otto, Subaru meets Roswaal, Ram, Garfiel, and the elder Ryuzu. Roswaal reveals that the barrier confines mixed-blood residents, including Emilia, and that it can only be dissolved if a qualified person clears three trials. The villagers are effectively being held to force Emilia’s participation. Emilia accepts the burden, but her first attempt leaves her terrified and unconscious. Subaru follows her into the graveyard and is accepted as another challenger. Instead of facing an enemy, he awakens in his old bedroom in Japan, apparently restored to his former life. His father enters with familiar energy, while Subaru’s memories of Lugunica temporarily recede, beginning a trial centered on the past he abandoned.
