Following another reset, Subaru seeks Echidna but is thrust into the second trial: visions of worlds that may have continued after each of his deaths. He witnesses friends grieving, investigating, or blaming themselves beside his abandoned bodies. The possibility that Return by Death leaves real timelines behind destroys the emotional defense that allowed him to treat suicide as a tool. A comforting Rem appears, but Subaru recognizes inconsistencies and exposes her as Carmilla, the Witch of Lust, whom Echidna sent to stabilize him. Echidna then offers a contract: she will share her knowledge and guide every loop until Subaru achieves his desired future. Before he agrees, the other witches reveal the cost. Echidna’s curiosity would lead him through countless unnecessary deaths, and she shows little concern for anyone’s suffering. She admits that “that person” was never predetermined, making Beatrice’s centuries of waiting an experiment. Subaru rejects her contract. Satella enters the tea party and asks him to value and save himself. Her arrival turns the gathering into a dispute over whether Subaru’s power should serve an outcome, a witch’s curiosity, or the life of the person forced to use it.
