The blue flowers ensnare Subaru inside an illusion, but Ia, a minor spirit Julius secretly assigned to protect him, breaks the spell. Julius frees the rest of the force, and Subaru confronts Ram, who believes he abandoned Emilia. After the misunderstanding is resolved, Ram helps convince the distrustful villagers to accept evacuation. Felix discovers that one merchant is a concealed cultist, but the spy detonates himself and knocks Subaru unconscious. When Subaru wakes, additional Fingers have attacked, confirming that Petelgeuse can move between compatible bodies. Wilhelm is badly wounded fighting the final host until Emilia arrives and freezes the attacker. The immediate battle ends, but Ia suddenly withdraws from Subaru. Realizing that the spirit sensed a new possession, Subaru runs away from Emilia and the evacuees. Petelgeuse takes control of Subaru’s body, using him as the next vessel. Subaru resists internally long enough to beg Felix and Julius to kill him before he can harm anyone. Felix initially tries to stop his heart gently, but Petelgeuse prevents it. Julius reluctantly delivers the fatal blow. Emilia hears the distant impact, unaware that Subaru has sacrificed another life to protect her.
