Subaru survives because Emilia and Ram arrive in time, but the many wolgarm bites have woven numerous curses through his body. Beatrice cannot remove them all, and unless every creature responsible is killed, Subaru will die within hours. Rem, blaming herself for the danger, has already returned to the forest alone. Subaru refuses to wait and joins Ram in pursuing her. Ram explains that losing her horn years earlier left her far weaker than Rem, forcing the pair to rely on strategy rather than power. Subaru exploits the Witch’s scent by deliberately invoking the forbidden subject of Return by Death, drawing the mabeast pack toward himself. He and Ram tumble from a cliff and encounter Rem, who is berserk in oni form and unable to distinguish allies from enemies. Using Ram’s instructions, Subaru dodges Rem’s attacks and strikes her horn, temporarily returning her to herself. Their reunion is cut short by the transformed puppy shaman and the surrounding pack. Exhausted, wounded, and still cursed, Subaru must protect both sisters while the true controller of the attack reveals a much larger and more dangerous body.
