Echidna identifies the creatures that ate Subaru as the Great Rabbit, one of the Three Great Mabeasts, and summons other Witches of Sin to answer his questions. Typhon, the Witch of Pride, tests his guilt by shattering his body; Minerva, the Witch of Wrath, heals him through furious compassion. Subaru then meets Daphne, the Witch of Gluttony and creator of the White Whale and Great Rabbit. Her warped logic treats victims as food and predators as solutions to hunger, but she reveals that the Rabbit is drawn to concentrated mana and cannot truly die unless every individual is eliminated. Subaru leaves with useful knowledge, only to find the Sanctuary swallowed by black shadows. By repeatedly attempting to reveal Return by Death, he has provoked Satella’s manifestation. She has consumed nearly everyone and advances while declaring her love for him. Garfiel rescues Subaru briefly, but the darkness devours the Sanctuary and Roswaal calmly accepts death, expecting Subaru to restart. Satella’s overwhelming affection begins eroding Subaru’s mind as he is absorbed into her shadow. The loop transforms the mystery of the Sanctuary into a direct confrontation with the being who granted his power, showing that even seeking help can bring catastrophic punishment.
